History of the Popular Awards
The Popular Awards were first launched in 2023 by Youth Star Entertainment, with a mission to honor the voices, talents, and cultural icons that resonate most with the Sri Lankan public. What began as a vibrant celebration of teledrama and film has rapidly expanded to include television, music, radio, digital media, and even business excellence. In its inaugural year, the awards featured 38 categories, recognizing stars who shaped the year’s creative landscape. By 2024, it grew to include 69 categories and 83 awardees, establishing itself as a prestigious national event. Held at landmark venues like Nelum Pokuna Theatre and Waters Edge, the Popular Awards are now viewed as a key cultural milestone in Sri Lanka’s annual calendar.
The Value of the Popular Awards to Sri Lankans
To Sri Lankans, both at home and abroad, the Popular Awards represent more than just trophies — they symbolize recognition, inspiration, and unity. These awards empower emerging artists and celebrate national icons, reflecting the true spirit and identity of Sri Lankan culture. What sets the Popular Awards apart is the voice of the people — nominations and winners are often driven by public voting, ensuring that the awards are inclusive, democratic, and connected to everyday audiences. For young creators, it offers a platform to rise; for seasoned veterans, it honors decades of dedication. And for the nation, it proudly showcases Sri Lanka’s rich artistic and media talent to the world.
